On Kauai you will find many chickens roaming about.
Turns out they were brought over by the Polynesians (among other things) for food.
Over time other barnyard chickens were brought over, too.
When the hurricanes made landfall (4 since 1950) it over turned all the chicken coops and new and old chickens intermingled and thrived.
The other islands introduced the mongoose to eat the rats (that's another story) and instead they eat the chickens.
Kauai decided not to introduce the mongoose and the chickens and other birds all thrive having no natural predators.
Some of the locals don't like the feral chickens but most residents don't even think about them.
It is actually illegal to kill the chickens on Kaui... but, no one has ever been prosecuted.
The tourist industry has taken advantage of the opportunity and you can find lots of chicken paraphernalia in the shops.
Funny cause folks do anyway.
