We started calling it Chicken Town and it stuck. It should be Chicken Nursery because its used to hold baby chicks like broilers and broody hens and their chicks. Turns out 1x2 inch welded wire doesn't hold little baby chicks and they escape. Mamma hens learned to fly over the gate to keep track of the chicks that have gone AWOL.
Ninja chicken and her brood
Meet Ninja Chicken, she is stealthy and wise and the best broody hen we have. She stays with her chicks for months while the others abandon theirs after 3 to 4 weeks. She only pays visits to Chicken Town to eat and then leads her brood all over the property. She likes the goats and cow pen to roost in.
Brown Mamma
Mean, brown Momma chicken! She doesn't let anything near her chicks. She finally figured out how to fly over the gate and stay with her chicks when the escape Chicken Town. She is one of Ninja Chickens last batch of chicks.
White Mamma
White Mamma was only sitting on two eggs and only one survived. She is a good hen and her chick is the only one that stay very close to its Ma. White Mamma is also one of Ninja Chicken's babies.
This is Ninja Chicken with Brown and White Mamma last year in October. CUTE!
That's really interesting that Ninja chicken is such a good broody mama. She was such a bad teenager! Sounds like Brown Mama learned well from Ninja Chicken, too :) But it also sounds like Ninja Chicken still doesn't stay in the chicken pen, either!
now wouldn't it be fun if you had duckling town too???
ReplyDeleteThat would be fun! Would have to make a new pen because the drakes are mean to the chickens. hee hee... Arlen won't mind building more pens! Hahah
